Depression is a condition which is misunderstood in many ways by the population at large. Some mistaken beliefs are as follows:

It is simply a prolonged period of sadness and people should be able to “snap out of it”
Only weak people can develop depression
It is caused by a major event such as death or divorce

It’s only “in your head”
Strong men don’t get depressed
It runs in families

Symptoms and treatment of depression

By the time a diagnosis of depression has been made, a person may have been suffering symptoms for a long time without realizing just what was amiss. Diagnosis involves a complete evaluation and questions concerning a description of symptoms and the presence of any current life stress situations.
